I ran across this article, "A City Drenched in Sugar," the other day in the New York Times.  It's a nice discussion of some iconic New Orleans confections with a little history baked in.  Guess all eyes are focused on the Super Bowl which has done an unwelcome and rude cannonball into the heart of Mardi Gras, interrupting parades for a weekend.  Boo dat!

Wow!  This is some serious Mardi Gras nail art!  Follow the links for "how to" instructions that  make it sound easy. Yeah, right!  I have enough trouble with the eyeliner and eyelashes, so I just don't see this happening at all.  Maybe some blue suede nails?  Actually, that sounds rather gross-looking.  

Now, a light-up, tulle shrug is something I could get behind!  This just screams "throw me something, mister!"  Can I figure out how to make one of these?

10 Years of Perfect Hair

Love this year's Rolling Elvi posters, commemorating 10 years of perfect hair!  We have some very talented Krewe members who designed these as well as the logo that will be on our signature throws.

We'll have to wind up the shoe decorating this weekend, pack them up, and ship them off to New Orleans.  The Zapp's shoe theme from last year was too fun not to repeat, but we went a little more topical on most of them with Elvis movie posters and Reese's Peanut Butter-Banana Cream Cup wrappers.  Too bad these were a limited edition candy from Reese's.  How fun would it be to have a case of those to throw out to parade-goers?!  Catching throws is hard work, ya know?  Folks are out there for hours, rain or shine, freezing or balmy temperatures, and they need to keep their strength up!

A real "King" cake!

It's king cake season!  I just read this morning that Cochon Butcher in New Orleans has come out with an Elvis-inspired king cake filled with peanut butter and bananas, topped with marshmallows and bacon!  Bacon?  Did you say "bacon?"  And all of Cochon Butcher's king cake creations come with a little, pink pig inside instead of your run-of-the-mill plastic baby.

The "Elvis" is only available by the slice in the restaurant or can be ordered whole.  I wonder if they will ship?!  I'm adding this to my itinerary for eating my way through New Orleans the second week of February!

Lt. Dan! Lt. Dan!

O.M.G.!  All King's Day is tomorrow, and we're so far behind on the shoe decorating.  So much for my plans to get a head start and have our shoe creations ride back to New Orleans with Tom.  We had just too much going on between the holidays, agility, and work.  Krewe of Muses parade looms but a month away!

The big news for 2013 is the Krewe of the Rolling Elvi is scheduled to appear in 2 parades.  In addition to Muses, we'll be in the Krewe of Orpheus parade on Lundi Gras night, February 11th.  The bad news is Orpheus is a really pretty, polished parade and fun to watch, so I hope we don't miss the bulk of it.  The good news is "Mardi Gras' most spectacular parade" will be that much more spectacular this year! This year's celebrity monarchs: Gary Sinise (and the Lt. Dan Band) and Tillman the skateboarding dog!

Porque no?

Just back from Rio and heading out of town again for San Fermin in Nueva Orleans 2012, including the 6th annual Encierro or running of the bulls.  Obviously, it's not Mardi Gras, but this is another event on The Rolling Elvi's  busy social and performance calendar.  Because what's a bull run without Elvis, or "Los Elvidores" in this case?


The route has been moved again this year.  The bull run will start at the Sugar Mill across front the convention center, will turn up Poydras, back up Tchoupitoulas, then finish back at the Sugar Mill.  Personally, I think having it go through the quarter lends it a more authentic feel, so I'm curious as to the reason for the last minute venue change.


We won't have the benefit of a balcony this year for photography and videography.  There are thousands of people who show up to participate, so we'll do our best to find a good spot amid the mass of humanity and at a safe distance from the herds of running bulls!
